The annual UWF Art Faculty exhibition showcases new works of contemporary art from Department of Art faculty and surveys the breadth of work currently produced by UWF Art professors. It is an opportunity for students and community members to gain a sense of the professional work produced by the department.

The UWF Art Faculty exhibition features the work of visual art professors Jim Jipson, Valerie George, Joseph Herring, Amy Ruddick, Dan Kelleher, John Markowitz, Sally Miller, Greg Saunders, Lyda Toy, Marzia Prendergast and professor emeritus Hank Heuler. The exhibition also includes the display of new publications by art historian Barbara Larson and the work of four new visual art faculty members: Thomas Asmuth, Gary Batzloff, Gina Cestaro and Adam Shiverdecker.

Formally trained painters, Rachel Jones and David Sullivan negotiate the complex relationship between Abstract Expressionism and Pop Art; two major painting movements of the 20th century. Jones' murky figurative pastorals coupled with Sullivan’s neon color palette and inventive use of materials blur the styles of Abstract Expressionism and Pop Art. The formal and conceptual issues presented in the exhibition, Gestural Pop consistently challenge contemporary artists working today.

Statement from the Curator:

The 2009-2010 season presents a series of exhibitions featuring the visual and conceptual interplay between sets of two artists. For each exhibition, the coupled artists were chosen for their differing motivations and varying use of materials. These differences are to act as complimentary forces, which work to create a stimulating discourse between the artists and viewers within the transitory space of the gallery. The artists are encouraged to converse before, during and after the installation of their work in the gallery. This continuing dialogue, facilitated by the gallery space, is intended to form an active platform upon which dynamic and engaging explorations of contemporary art can develop.

Projected Landscapes: A Collaborative Exhibition

The technological boom of the 21^st century has transformed social and aesthetic environments. As a result, artists today are re-addressing and redefining “landscape” much like their 19^th century counterparts who explored, through the traditional genre of landscape painting, man’s relationship to nature in the wake of the Industrial Revolution.

In Projected Landscapes, contemporary artists, Courtney Egan and David Webber, explore differing iterations of “landscape” through atmospheric digital projections and video installations. For the artists, the idea of “landscape” is not one of escapism as it was for their 19^th century predecessors, but of evaluation. Egan's use of technology in her work supports an observational investigation of her personal environment in New Orleans, Louisiana. Through digital media, she explores the collisions of human invention and organic processes. Egan uses technology to visually slow time, capture and depict erosion, death and the inevitable transformation of landscape.

Contrastingly, Webber turns inward and uses technology to map the shadowy terrain of memory and the subconscious. He uses video as a means to visually record his recollections and then replay them as our subconscious replays memories in an effort to form and define the self. Through these reflections, Webber’s work questions the accuracy of our memories and explores the way these fabrications and truths interact to form identity.

“Altered"National Juried Experimental Photography Exhibition

Eligibility: The Art Gallery at the University of West Florida will host “Altered,” an experimental photography exhibition. Submissions should explore the realm of experimental photography. Suggested approaches are (but not limited to) combining photography with various media, experimenting with process and inventive ways of shooting, contact-printing, cyanotypes, gum prints, photography as performance, photography as sculpture, collage, digital, mixed media, toys and other non-traditional cameras, transfer-printing process, etc.

Note: sculpture and installation work must be ready to exhibit and cannot exceed sixty inches in any dimension unassembled. The work must be original, completed within the last three years, and not previously exhibited at The Art Gallery at UWF. The Art Gallery reserves the right to exclude any work that presents complex installation problems.

Juror: International artist Tomiko Jones

Awards: Merit awards up to $1600 are available. All participating artists will receive an exhibition catalog that includes a juror’s statement, images of exhibiting artwork and information on participating artists. In addition, The Art Gallery at UWF promotes all exhibitions through printed and digital material, which includes an exhibition postcard sent to our mailing list of over 3,000 recipients, a mass email newsletter, announcement on The Art Gallery website, and exposure on our blogsite.

Site-specific work in progress entitled "Mind in Motion" by Tucson, AZ artist John Davis. Scheduled date for installation February 2010.

“The concept takes a cue from robotics and uses a representation of a robotic arm in an arrangement that appears to be in motion, but momentarily stopped. A large wheel forms the source for the robotic arm and rides on one end of a curved “inclined plane”. The robot arm pulls on the opposite and end of the curved plane. The arrangement of the curved plane and the cylinder beneath is based on the lever and fulcrum principle of elementary physics. The curving of the plane appears to be result of the forces of the robot arm while the large wheel may be rolling off the plane if not for the arm. The sculpture becomes, in one sense, a display of various forces relating to physics, mechanics, and robotics. On one level this illustrates the “hands on” project based learning that is the approach of the new school. The linearity of the arm elements and the roundness of the disc and plank are in keeping with the zero/one language of computers and the building itself. The curvature of the plank echoes a segment of the series of arcs that form the nautilus-the symbol of the university.” John Davis

The Juried Student Art Exhibition is a chance for students from all across campus to display their artwork in a professional environment. The UWF Gallery of Art strives to foster student’s passion to create artwork and pursue further artistic endeavors. The Department of Art Faculty will select the artwork to be exhibited while invitational jurors, Anna Lamar Switzer Center for Visual Arts’ Curator/Artist Vivian Spencer and Plugged Art Collective Director/Artist Gina Cestaro will select awards for the student show. Gallery hours are Tuesday through Friday 10am to 5pm, 1 hour prior to all CFPA events and during Festival on the Green. The Gallery is free and open to the public.

Genius Loci Artist & Scholar Series: Chip Linscott

The University of West Florida Department of Art will host the Genius Loci Artist & Scholar Lecture series, an event and lecture by scholar Chip Linscott, Mar. 5 at 4 p.m. in the Center for Fine and Performing Arts Gallery of Art, Building 82. All events are free and open to the public.

Chip Linscott explores temporal and corporeal relations in African  films, with special emphasis placed on the role of capital and varying  conceptions of tradition and modernity. Excerpts from the  films of "Sembene", "Gerima", and others will accompany the talk.

Chip Linscott teaches in the Department of Interdisciplinary Arts at Ohio  University, where he is also a PhD Candidate specializing in film and music. He  holds degrees in Philosophy/Religious Studies and Interdisciplinary Humanities. Linscott regularly lectures on film, art, education, visual culture, and  philosophy/theory at national and international conferences. His scholarly  interests include film theory, visual culture, jazz studies, post-colonialism and trans-nationalism.

The event is part of the UWF Department of Art’s Genius Loci series, a program of visiting artists and scholars supported by the Lefferts L. Mabie Foundation and the UWF Student Government Association. Genius Loci or “Spirit of Place” is the sense of continuity and authenticity of a particular location. Speakers bring with them a sense of their own context, the place from where they produce. Linscott is attending the Genius Loci Lecture series by invitation from UWF Department of Art Visiting Artist Felecia Carlisle.

Inspired by myth, history, and her southern roots, Raine Bedsole’s artwork reveals older worlds, a world of ritual and transcendence. Instruments for Navigating Inner Worlds is a poetic mixture of painting, sculpture, and text. This exhibition delves with the surge of misplaced things and emotions left after post “K”… “Boats, left in trees with the ragged remains of possessions dangling from the branches tell the story of hurricane Katrina’s storm surge and aftermath here on the Gulf Coast. All too often this is becoming a familiar sight in coastal areas…”says Bedsole. Instruments for Navigating Inner Worlds is an emotive body of work that uses the flood as a universal archetype symbolizing both death and birth.

Bedsole received a BFA from Auburn University and a MFA in 1989 from the San Francisco Art Institute. Her works are included in the collections of New Orleans’ Museum of Art and Louis Armstrong Airport, the South Carolina Museum of Art, the Miami Herald and Nordstroms, among others. Born in 1960 in Mobile, Alabama she currently resides in New Orleans, La.

The University of West Florida Department of Art will host the Genius Loci Artist & Scholar Lecture series, an event and lecture by Artist Benjamin Lord, Feb. 12th at 4 p.m. in the UWF Gallery of Art, Building 82. All events are free and open to the public.

Since receiving his MFA from UCLA in 2002, Lord's art has taken a variety of forms including large color prints, books, sculpture, reading-room installations and print portfolios. Employing vocabularies from the contradictory legacies of art photography and conceptual art, his work explores illusionism, the evolving California landscape, the cultural mechanisms of photography, the boundary between process and product, and the relationship between fiction and reality. He has exhibited in New York, Paris, and Barcelona. He lives and works in Los Angeles.

Visiting Scholar Tom Williams will present his lecture, "Lipstick Ascending: Claes Oldenburg in New Haven in 1969 at Yale University" which he has also presented at the Museum of Modern Art in New York City.

Williams is attending the Genius Loci Lecture series by invitation from Art Department Chair, Dr. Suzette Doyon. Tom Williams is currently completing his dissertation entitled, "Claes Oldenburg, Eros, and the 1960s" for his Ph.D. in art history and criticism from the State University of New York at Stony Brook. He is also a 2008-2009 Critical Studies Fellow at the Whitney Museum Independent Study Program in New York City, and he has published articles on Oldenburg, Krzysztof Wodiczko, and other topics.

On January 9th at 6PM, Williams will present a second lecture "Pop Art in General" at the Pensacola Museum of Art that will be in conjunction with the Jasper Johns exhibition at the museum.

On November 21^st, 2008 Jamie Rose McMillen will present her BFA Senior Exhibition JROSE. The exhibition will display a reflection of Jamie McMillen’s oil paintings done over the past six months.

Jamie McMillen, an aspiring artist in our local area, is attracted to the Urban Mecca of street art and tagging. McMillen incorporates her own expression of these ideals and techniques using an exciting application of paint.

PENSACOLA – The University of West Florida Department of Art will present “By Air, By Land, By Sea: Performing Place in Australia,” a Genius Loci Series lecture by Mary Anderson Oct. 23 at 4 p.m. in the Art Gallery of the Center for Fine and Performing Arts, Building 82. The event is free and open to the public.

Mary Anderson, visiting professor in the UWF Department of Theatre, recently returned from a year as an Australian Fulbright Scholar. Anderson was an honorary research associate in the School of Geography and Environmental Studies at the University of Tasmania, studying sense of place in site-specific performance.

With a background as a dancer and puppeteer, Anderson’s interests focus on the way objects move from place to place. Her dissertation investigates the relationship between site and performance and how each influences the notion and experiences of the other. She earned a master’s in theatre from California State University-Sacramento and master of fine arts degree in dramatic art from the University of California-Davis.

Genius Loci presents "My Tel Aviv"

“My Tel Aviv” an event and lecture by Nili Yosha Sept. 25th at 4 p.m. in the Center for Fine and Performing Arts Art Gallery, Building 82, in the Art Gallery. All events are free and open to the public.

Israeli-American artist , scholar and activist Nili Yosha, presents her  photo-project called "My Tel Aviv," an activist's  reflection on the human side of Tel Aviv, unseen by the  eye of the tourist. Visiting artist Nili Yosha is invited as a part of the Genius Loci’s theme “Friends and Family”, an invitation by lecture series coordinator and Art Faculty, Felecia Carlisle.

The daughter of independent filmmakers Yaki and Dorit Yosha, Nili worked in the Department of Art for the Yosha’s latest feature film entitled, "Still Walking," a drama about contemporary Israeli life. As the 2008 Haas/Koshland award winner, an award for a year of independent work in Israel, she will continue to develop her photo essay series, "My Tel Aviv", study Arabic, and translate a novel for her Masters Thesis in Literature from San Francisco State University beginning in January of 2009.

the gallery is sponsoring a national juried exhibition exploring the art of paper. Entries are welcome in any medium. New media entries are encouraged, experimental as well as traditional, on or of paper.

Juror: International artist Molly Smith, MFA from Columbia University. Represented by K S Art Gallery based in New York City.

Awards up to $1600.
